Modifying auditory perception with prisms? Aftereffects of prism adaptation on a wide auditory spectrum in musicians and nonmusicians

چکیده

Prism adaptation consists of pointing to visual targets while wearing prisms that shift the field laterally. The aftereffects are not restricted sensorimotor level but extend spatial cognition. There is a link between representation and auditory frequency, with an association low frequencies on left side high right space. present study aimed first at evaluating wide range in musicians nonmusicians. We used ‘auditory interval bisection judgment’ within three intervals. results showed pseudoneglect behavior pretest nonmusicians for frequency intervals, reflecting perceptual bias subjective center toward lower frequencies. second aim was evaluate prism expanded spectrum. leftward optical deviation intervals Adaptation affects perception extended spectrum, by shifting provides innovative data about its modulation adaptation.

Auditory and cognitive performance in elderly musicians and nonmusicians

Musicians represent a model for examining brain and behavioral plasticity in terms of cognitive and auditory profile, but few studies have investigated whether elderly musicians have better auditory and cognitive abilities than nonmusicians. The aim of the present study was to examine whether being a professional musician attenuates the normal age-related changes in hearing and cognition. Elder...

Neuroplastic Adaptations of the Auditory System in Musicians and Nonmusicians

The human ear has been adapted by evolutionary processes to respond to sound frequencies that are present in the environment and convey information relevant to survival and reproductive fitness. However, the specific features of most sounds that we hear on a second-by-second basis (for example, the harmonic structure, loudness, and temporal shape of a particular voice, language, or musical note...

Processing of Complex Auditory Patterns in Musicians and Nonmusicians

In the present study we investigated the capacity of the memory store underlying the mismatch negativity (MMN) response in musicians and nonmusicians for complex tone patterns. While previous studies have focused either on the kind of information that can be encoded or on the decay of the memory trace over time, we studied capacity in terms of the length of tone sequences, i.e., the number of i...

Auditory and visual memory in musicians and nonmusicians.

Numerous studies have shown that musicians outperform nonmusicians on a variety of tasks. Here we provide the first evidence that musicians have superior auditory recognition memory for both musical and nonmusical stimuli, compared to nonmusicians. However, this advantage did not generalize to the visual domain. Previously, we showed that auditory recognition memory is inferior to visual recogn...
